At St Mabyn Church of England Primary School, music is a celebrated, vibrant part of our curriculum and wider school life. With varied concerts each year, we offer our pupils numerous opportunities, to rehearse, perform and build their musical knowledge. We support our children with their individual interests and talents; almost a third of our school takes individual instrumental lessons each week from visiting specialist teachers. Major events each term include our Harvest, Christmas and Easter concerts, varied band and choir ensembles and performances at our local music festival.
Our children learn music skills and knowledge progressively through themed, purposeful learning that is integral in our creative curriculum. We use Charanga as our scheme. To enable music teaching to be accessible to all, staff are supported to enable children to gain a firm understanding of and intrigue in music through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We have a wide range of musical instruments in school and rent from the Asone Music Hub when needed.
Choir and Ensembles
There are choirs and ensembles, which can vary each year, and these take place during morning break and after school. Pupils who play an instrument are encouraged to join an ensemble which will accelerate their learning and provide additional enjoyment, often lifelong.
Concerts We have concerts during school when pupils of all ability and experience perform in front of their peers, family and friends. Performance is an important part of pupils’ musical education and these informal concert opportunities enable confidence to grow as pupils become more accustomed to performing. Our children benefit from Asone funded music projects that allow them to access a wider range of musical instruments and ensemble opportunities. We are proud to be part of Cornwall's annual Songfest concert. This year, we will be performing in Sterts Theatre, Upton Cross.
