Writing Curriculum

Our school is one part of a family of well-connected schools. It is a small, nurturing school packed full of love:  love for one another; love for learning; love for our neighbours and community and love for God. Overview

At St Mabyn Primary School, we recognise that reading and writing skills underpin all areas of our school curriculum. Considering the fundamental importance of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing in our daily lives, we strive to develop each child’s writing ability to enable our children to become life-long learners.

Statement of Intent

Our Writing curriculum is shaped by our school vision, values and curriculum drivers CAN:-

 

Develop a Caring heart- Children will find out who they are, their place within the world, how they fit in and can aspire to make a difference.

Develop an Active mind and body- Children will have the wisdom to use their knowledge and skills to be the best learners now and for their future.

Develop a Nurturing character- Children will stand up for themselves and others; respect each other, be prepared for personal challenge and successfully collaborate.

 

From mark-making in Pre-School to extended writing across the curriculum in KS2, at St Mabyn, it is our intent that children receive a high quality and engaging writing curriculum to enable children to confidently communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotions through their writing. We want pupils to be able to write clearly, accurately and coherently through acquiring a wide vocabulary and a solid understanding of grammar, whilst inspiring and nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing and where children recognise their own potential. We intend to create writers who can re-read, edit and improve their writing whilst allowing imagination to flourish.

Implement

Talk 4 Writing

 

Across our classes, both fiction and non-fiction writing is primarily taught through Pie Corbett’s Talk 4 Writing Programme, with incorporation of Alan Peat’s exciting sentence structures. See below Teaching Guides for Progression.

 

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

 

In EYFS and KS1, RWI Phonics sessions take place daily and spelling, punctuation and grammar is incorporated within English lessons. In Classes 2 and 3, teaching of punctuation and grammar is incorporated within English lessons, and spelling is specifically taught within Guided Reading sessions on a carousel basis, using the No Nonsense Spelling Programme.

 

Handwriting

 

EYFS & Key Stage 1 – children take part in activities to develop their fine and gross motor-skills and recognition of patterns, children begin to learn how to correctly hold a pencil to form recognisable letters. They are given opportunities to develop their handwriting, using the pre cursive style. Handwriting is discussed within and linked to phonics sessions, while teachers and support staff continue to guide children on how to form letters correctly. Handwriting is practised daily in Key Stage 1.

 

Key Stage 2 – Children continue to have direct teaching and regular practice of handwriting. We aim for them to develop a fluent style by the end of Year 6, while enabling to adapt their handwriting for different purposes, such as: neat handwriting for presented work, a faster script for note making and the ability to print for labelling diagrams, etc.

 

Let’s Think in English

 

In order to encourage higher-order thinking in English, we use the Let’s Think in English teaching programme. The lessons are based on structured challenge and include the development of understanding through discussion, problem – solving and structured reflection – skills needed across the curriculum. These lessons are planned and used alongside the Talk 4 Writing units.

 

Cross Curricular Writing

 

We recognise the importance of the role that writing plays in all aspects of the curriculum. We teach for purpose while fostering an enjoyment of writing through use of cross curricular activities, drama and ICT. In order to utilise skills taught in Literacy lessons, we set high expectations in all areas of writing.

 

Assessment

 

We use Pupil Asset Point in Time assessment and work towards end of KS1 and KS2 end of year assessments using interim frameworks and national tests. We have created a Writing Portfolio (a selection of pupil’s work from each year group and ability group for each half term) to support teachers in making judgements against assessment framework and demonstrates in year progress. This Portfolio provides moderated exemplification from EYFS to Year 6 and shows how objectives can be met. This has enabled us to consistently set high expectations for our pupils.

 

Progression

 

At St Mabyn, we have three mixed age classes – EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2, Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6. Our teachers are supported with planning to ensure coverage of all national curriculum elements within the age groups in their classes. To enable this, teaching is delivered in whole classes, small groups and staggered tasks where appropriate. This allows us to adapt and remove barriers so that all children can access learning and achieve.

 

 

Impact

 

In our school, there is a clear progression of children’s work and teachers’ expectations in subject knowledge. Children’s work shows a range of topics and evidence of the curriculum coverage. It is intended that through our Statement of Intent and Implementation that children make good progress and that by the end of year 6, they will be able to write accurately, adapting language for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. Our pupils are developing a wide range of vocabulary, and most importantly, they are developing a love for writing that will equip them well in order to become life-long learners.
