At St Mabyn School, we aim to develop children’s sense of place. We teach geography to enable children to gain knowledge and understanding of places in the world (including both political and physical geography); and to increase their knowledge of other cultures. In so doing, they learn respect and understanding of what it means to be a positive citizen in a multi-cultural country. We also teach geography so that children learn graphic skills, including how to use, draw and interpret maps and to enable children to know and understand environmental problems at a local, regional, national and global scale. We also support the development of a variety of other skills, including those of enquiry, problem solving, computing, investigation and how to present conclusions in the most appropriate way.
At St Mabyn School, our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Children investigate a range of places – both in Britain and abroad – to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Cornwall so that they can develop of real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special. We also developing the children’s ability to apply geographical skills to enable to confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences. Through high quality teaching, we develop the following essential characteristics of geographers:
- An excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world;
- An comprehensive understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected;
- An extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary;
- Fluency in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills, as well as effective presentation techniques;
- The ability to reach clear conclusions and explain their findings;
- Excellent fieldwork skills as well as other geographical aptitudes and techniques;
- The ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment;
- A genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the world and the people who live here.
Our Geography curriculum is shaped by our school vision, values and curriculum drivers CAN:-

We aim to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.
Our children will be taught on a topic based planning system, linking learning through different subjects. We will implement a knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) all children must master;
- A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth concentrating on the geographical skills suited to the age group;
- A memory box for each topic to which children will add objects and anything which they feel will help them to remember what they have learned in the future.
- Challenge questions for pupils to apply their learning in a philosophical/open manner;
- Trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience;
Outcomes in topic and literacy books, evidence a broad and balanced geography curriculum and demonstrate children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. Children review their successes in achieving the lesson objectives at the end of every session, using purple pen. Children also record what they have learned comparative to their starting points at the end of every topic, using a KWI sheet. As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. Children are able to learn about careers related to geography from members of the local and wider community with specialist skills and knowledge, ensuring that they are well prepared for the next steps of their education.
