St Mabyn Church of England Primary School

Design Technology Curriculum

At St Mabyn school, through God’s love we learn, grow and flourish together.

Our school is one part of a family of well-connected schools. It is a small, nurturing school packed full of love:  love for one another; love for learning; love for our neighbours and community and love for God. It comfortably sits in the heart of a picturesque, small rural village being overlooked by St Mabyn Church. In our school, adults and children collaborate to create a safe learning environment where everyone can flourish and achieve greatness, becoming curious imaginative life-long learners. St Mabyn School is the gateway through which the future possibility of the adult emerges.

1 John 3:18

"My little children, let us not love in word or tongue, but in deed and in truth,"

At St Mabyn School, we believe that Design and Technology helps to provoke and answer questions about the rapidly changing world.  Our school enables children to identify needs and opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and by making products and systems. Through the study of Design and Technology, they combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industry. This allows children to reflect on and evaluate past and present technology, its uses and impacts. Our children will connect new knowledge with existing knowledge, as well as developing fluency and applying their knowledge and skills;  drawing on skills and knowledge gained from other curriculum areas e.g. mathematics, science, art. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, children develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation. Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. It can improve analysis, problem solving, practical capability and evaluation skills

We at St Mabyn School intend to offer our children the chance to use creative thinking and design within a defined purpose and tangible outcome. By following the expectations from the National Curriculum. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, children are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of designing and making and evaluating. They work safely in a range of contexts through our topic-based approach, which allows for cross curricular links to be made.

As a Christian school, our vision and values are at the heart of everything we do. We want our children to show their understanding of our Christian vision through design and technology through its inspiring, creative and imaginative sessions. Children learn to plan and design by taking risks, being reflective and developing resilience.  Our Design Technology Curriculum is therefore shaped by our school vision, values and curriculum drivers CAN:-

Develop a Caring heart- Children will find out who they are, their place within the world, how they fit in and aspire to make a difference.

Develop an Active mind and body- Children will have the wisdom to use their knowledge and skills to be the best learners now and for their future.

Develop a Nurturing character- Children will stand up for themselves and others; respect each other, be prepared for personal challenge and successfully collaborate.

We aim to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.

At St Mabyn, we have developed a rolling programme to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum Design Technology attainment targets, our Design and Technology lessons are sequenced and planned with a purpose in mind. Lessons may link to our termly or half termly topics focusing on knowledge and skills intended to link within a specific focus.

Within our lessons we follow the expectations of the National curriculum and ensure children:-

  •  develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  •  critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  •  understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook

Children may work in individually, pairs or groups and will complete design and make sheets showing their learning journey and how their products may have changed through adaptations.

At St Mabyn we
