Overview

At St Mabyn School, we feel that all of our children should develop an understanding of history and their position within British and world history.  It is our goal that they should develop a sense of chronology and time and an understanding of how people lived in the past. They should also have an awareness of life in different societies or cultures and a knowledge of how beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. We will teach them to have an understanding of cause and effect such as how events in history have changed our lives, or affected the way in which we live, as well as an understanding of how historical events and people have influenced our lives today. We will enhance their awareness of significant events and people in British and world history and expand their knowledge of local, national and international historical events. We will teach them the skills of enquiry, investigation, analysis, interpretation, evaluation and presentation .

 

Intent

 At St Mabyn School, we intend to have a highly motivating and stimulating History curriculum which encourages children to ask questions, be independent learners, collaborate and be aspirational, as set out in the National Curriculum.  We believe that high-quality history lessons inspire children to want to know more about the past and to think and act as historians. By linking learning to a range of topics, children have opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, build an overview of Britain’s past as well as that of the wider world, and to be able to communicate historically. We develop children with the following essential characteristics to help them become historians:

§ An excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events and contexts from a range of historical periods, including significant events in Britain’s past;

§ The ability to think critically about history and communicate ideas confidently to a range of audiences;

§ The ability to support, evaluate and challenge their own and others’ views using historical evidence from a range of sources;

§ The ability to think, reflect, debate, discuss and evaluate the past by formulating and refining questions and lines of enquiry;

§ A respect for historical evidence and the ability to make critical use of it to support their learning;

§ A desire to embrace challenging activities, including opportunities to undertake high-quality research across a range of history topics;

§ A developing sense of curiosity about the past and how and why people interpret the past in different ways.

 

 

Implement

Our History curriculum is shaped by our school vision, values and curriculum drivers CAN:-

Develop a Caring heart- Children will find out who they are, their place within the world, how they fit in and can aspire to make a difference.

Develop an Active mind and body- Children will have the wisdom to use their knowledge and skills to be the best learners now and for their future.

Develop a Nurturing character- Children will stand up for themselves and others; respect each other, be prepared for personal challenge and successfully collaborate.

We aim to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. 

Our children will be taught on a topic based planning system, linking learning through different subjects. We will implement a  knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) all children must master;

§ A cycle of lessons for each subject, which carefully plans for progression and depth;

§ A memory box for each topic to which children will add objects and anything which they feel will help them to remember what they have learned in the future.

 § Challenge questions for pupils to apply their learning in a philosophical/open manner;

§ Trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience;

 

Impact
Outcomes in topic and literacy books, evidence a broad and balanced history curriculum and demonstrate the children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge. Children review the agreed successes at the end of every session using purple pen. Children also record what they have learned comparative to their starting points at the end of every topic, using a purple pen.
Emphasis is placed on analytical thinking and questioning which helps pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world and are curious to know more about the past. Through this study pupils learn to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Regular heritage projects provide further relevant and contextual learning, engaging members of the community in children’s learning and providing positive role models from the community for children to learn from.
