Class 2

Welcome to Class 2

Class 2 is a very happy place to be! We are a mixed age class of seven to ten year olds and we love learning together. This term we have been looking at 'Our Powerful Planet' from rainforests and oceans to the world of invertebrates in our school sensory garden! For National Science week we took part and created some extraordinary challenges. We investigated whether we could make one Curly Wurly caramel chocolate bar stretch to over four metres, and some of us did it! Matching the world record! We created our own investigations by making invertebrate hotels outside. We had a variety of hotel guests including centipedes, spiders, beetles, and slugs! We observed our hotels, recorded the results and we now need to decide how to present our data!

Class 2 have been busy in other subject areas too! In Literacy we have been practising our persuasive techniques by writing to our local MP. We decided, through a class vote, that Cornwall needed more wildflower meadows as they are an excellent habitat for insects which are very important because they are pollinators and they provide food for birds!

In Maths, Year 5 have started fractions while Year 3 and 4 have been learning about statistics, this has been useful for our Science and Literacy work and we have been making lots of cross curricular links!

In Art, are making endangered animals out of poppy stems. We will research the animals markings and use a fine brush with acrylics to paint the stem and head. Very intricate and sophisticated work! We are going to add hair and beads to create manes and eyes, and lots of other textures!

I am so very proud of Class 2, you are achieving really wonderful things this year! You are all brilliant. I love how much you love learning and how kind you all are to each other!

Home Learning during school closure

Hello everyone! smiley Well done for coming online to check your home learning tasks! Remember to use Class Dojo, SumDog and Spag.com too, there is plenty to keep us busy at home but remember it is really important to get outside in the sunshine and to be active too! smiley

Look at https://www.twinkl.co.uk/home-learning-hub for ideas for a daily routine and learning packs.

For maths, this site is really good  https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/

Stay active with https://www.gonoodle.com/good-energy-at-home-kids-games-and-videos/

Parents, thank you for your continued support with the children's learning at home.

Please keep up reading everyday and always record this in the reading record.

Please see home learning tasks below. Aim to do as many of these as you can. I know you will because you are all brilliant!

Stay well and active!

Weather Task 4 - Reread the classic poems about the weather - see task 2 below. Children could then write their own poems about the weather. They could use the writing paper provided in the pack and add their own illustrations. Use the poetry writing checklist to encourage your child to use skills that they will have been taught at school as they write their poems!

Weather Task 3 - Can you use this research sheet to find out about the weather in another country? Use books or the internet to look for information.

Weather task 1 - Can you use this template to keep a weather journal each day this week? Take time to consider the weather and notice the sky. Once completed if you wanted to extend this task you could paint the weather from your window or garden view.

Maths Task 3

The White Rose are an excellent source of quality maths activities. They are posting a maths activity a day. Click on the link above. Then click on your year group. Then click on week 1 and try the first activity. You can watch the video which shows you how to do the task. Can you try one a day this week?

Reading Task 1

Hi all :)
Happy Friday!
I am keeping the task simple today for fear of bombarding you all! Please remember only to do what you can and just to make the most of the things you do together. There is so much opportunity for learning in all of the things we do everyday :)

Reading Task 1
Today's task is to curl up somewhere that makes you feel safe and cosy. Maybe in the sunshine, maybe under a blanket on the sofa. Make a nice drink, for me it would be a hot chocolate :) and spend some time reading your reading book. Get into the story and enjoy the peace and serenity that reading brings.
Remember to record this in your reading record.

If you are looking for more learning for the weekend. Remember the maths division and multiplication pack I posted on Monday. Also 3 science tasks from yesterday. The song writing task and the song to learn task. Spag.com and Sumdog. And more reading...always :)

Enjoy that sunshine!

Big smiles to you, you lovely lot.
Miss N :)

Science Task 1

Sounds can be loud or quiet. Bigger vibrations make louder sounds, and smaller vibrations make quieter sounds. There are other ways sounds can be different.

Can you make a high sound? How about a low sound?

High and low are words to describe the pitch of a sound. The pitch of a sound is different to the amplitude.

Amplitude is a measure of how loud or quiet a sound is, and pitch is a measure of how high or low a sound is. High sounds can be quiet or loud, and low sounds can be quiet or loud too!

Watch this clip to see if you can hear and identify how different musical instruments create different sounds.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zsqw2hv

How did you do? Could you hear the different pitches?

Can you explore how high and low sounds are made, and see if you can spot any patterns when looking at how different instruments can create  sounds of different pitches?

Try different instruments and note down any observations about how the sounds change on your Exploring Pitch Activity Sheet (below in task 2 and 3) If you do not have any instruments could you try making one from elastic bands and some plastic recycling? - Send me a photo :)

Using a string instrument and 'exploring pitch activity sheet'

Use the string instrument or your elastic band instrument to play different sounds. Can you hear high and low sounds?

Look at the instrument. What do you notice about the way it makes high sounds?

What can you observe about the way it makes low sounds?

Draw a diagram of the string instrument, labelling how you played high sounds and low sounds.

Complete the table, noting down any observations you made about the way high and low sounds are made.

Watch this clip explaining how the pitch of a sound can be changed. Did you observe or notice anything similar?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/ztptsbk

On a string instrument, there are several ways to change the pitch.

The tighter, thinner or shorter the string is, the higher pitched the sound will be and the looser, thicker or longer the string is, the lower the sound will be.

Faster vibrations will make a sound higher, and slower vibrations will make a sound lower.

The ways of changing the strings all change the vibrations, which in turn change the pitch of the sound.

Now try the pan pip challenge below in Task 2 and 3 folders!

This Is One Moment Song

Can you learn this song for us all to sing together next week?

If you are locked out I will bring the key.
If you are lonely come and stand by me.
Cos the room keeps getting brighter as you shine a light.
and the world keeps getting kinder with you by my side.
This is one moment,
(This is) one people,
(This is) one lifetime,
(This is) one song. (x2)
If you feel diff'rent we will take your hand.
If you feel frightened come and join the band.
Cos the room keeps getting brighter as we shine a light,
and the world keeps getting kinder singing out side by side.
This is one moment,
(This is) one people,
(This is) one lifetime,
(This is) one song. (x2)
Every heartbeat drums together and fills up with pride
and we’re growing strong together, singing out side by side.
This is one moment,
(This is) one people,
(This is) one lifetime,
(This is) one song.
This is one moment, (Cos the room keeps getting brighter as you shine a light,)
(This is) one people,
(This is) one lifetime, (and the world keeps getting kinder with you by my side.)
(This is) one song (x 2)
The room keeps getting brighter as you shine a light,
and the world keeps getting kinder with you by my side.

Miss Norgard :)
Literacy/Music - Task 2

I have been speaking to Mrs Howells and we would like to try a really exciting project!

We would like the adults and children in Class 2 and 3 to write our own song about home learning. Let us make it about everything good that's happening now. All of the positive things! For example, having more time with our families.
I would like you to think of positive words and phrases that I could put together into a song with my guitar!
Then we can learn it and arrange a time when, in our homes, we all sing it- It might not work bit I'm excited to give it a try!

Instructions for lyric writing:

*Find a large piece of paper and some coloured pens or pencils

* Write down words all over the paper by thinking about your 5 senses
- How do you feel? write 5-7 words
-What can you see? write 5-7 words
-What can touch or feel on your skin? write 5-7 words
-Taste? write 2-4 words
-Smell? write 2-4 words

* Write down 12 or more words that link to memories you have had since Friday. Maybe this is a colour or a shape or a thing. I might write - beach, green, salt, sparkling sun...

*Then on lined paper, see if you can link any of these words into sentences or phrases. It is fun to try abstract sentences and phrases by linking really different words. How could they fit together in an interesting phrase?

*Last but not least! Send me your phrases.
My homework will be to fit them to music! :)

Fractions for year 4 and 5

Literacy Task 1

Literacy Task 1 - Weekend writing - Description.

Can you tell me about your weekend? smiley

You could describe the kind of food you have eaten, what kind of activities you have done, what you have seen - out of the window, on a trip to the shop, in the garden, in your house. What has happened in a book you are reading or a film you have watched?

YEAR 3 - aim to write 3 paragraphs - include all of the yellow writing techniques on the toolkit at least once (much more if you can)

YEAR 4 - aim to write 4 paragraphs - include all of the yellow and the green writing techniques on the toolkit at least once (much more if you can)

YEAR 5 - aim to write 5 paragraphs include all of the writing techniques on the toolkit at least once (much more if you can)

Join whichever year groups task you usually join for your writing, e.g. some of you in Year 3 aim to do Year 4 work, some of you in Year 5 are happy on Year 3 work. smiley
